Why can’t they make quiet microwave doors?

Every microwave oven that I used have a loud door. They all open and close with a click/thunk/bang. Why?

I hear you. It drives me nuts. I have found that if I push back with my thumb on the side of the microwave, I can close it with a sliding click. But my wife just absolutely slams the door! It makes me bonkers when I am trying to work on the computer or relax! I think it is because most people, such as my wife and probably all women, want the loud reassurance that the source of possible radiation is shut tight without any leaks! That is the only thing that I can figure. Otherwise, I would put some of those felt cabinet door cushions in there and be done with it.

I agree completely. There has to be something out there to quiet the microwave door. Some strip designed for this purpose. I too am the only male in the house. I use my thumb also to close it quietly. Three females in he house and they all close it hard- BANG! If anyone ever comes across anything or has any ideas please let us know.

Does anyone have a solution for making the microwave door quieter? My bedroom is directly above the kitchen and the microwave drives me bonkers. I already replaced the old microwave with a sharp – with audible noise elmination. (AWESOME) But the door still makes this awful slamming noise. I’m not sure what my roomate does – but aparently making oatmeal takes 3-4 tries in the microwave. So now i’m stuck with SLAM … SLAM … SLAM – instead of SLAM boop boop boop … beep beep SLAM boop boop boop … beeep beep SLAM boop boop … beep beep SLAM!!!

It isn’t women (dumb to even think it is a gender issue, by the way.
I am driven crazzzy with my father and his CLICK, SNAP OPEN. Then: SLAM!,
    This part: slow, drawn-out:
BEEP. pause BEEP, pause BEEP pause, BEEP pause, BEEP (20 TO 30 second rubble of micro)–rapid, loud BEEP,BEEP,BEEP, BEEP–long, drawn-out BEEEEPPPP. pause. SNAP OPEN….pause. SLAM!
AND!!!! REPEAT!!!! SOMETIMES TWO OR THREE TIMES—FOR OATMEAL!!!
THIS IS AFTER HE HAS ALREADY BOILED WATER ON THE STOVE WITH THE ENDLESS WHISTLE (OH, YEAH THE KETTLES ON, BETTER GET OVER THERE…)
MADDENING! THIS WAKES ME FROM A DREAMING SLEEP MOST EVERY SINGLE MORNING!

I share everyone’s hatred of this problem and I do have a partial solution: for any microwaves with an open button, hold the button while closing the door, then release the button once it’s closed. It mutes the noise somewhat. Anyone with basic science knowledge knows that there are 3 kill switches on microwaves making it next to impossible to be exposed to the radiation. Also, an expensive solution but my friend just redid her kitchen and installed a kitchenaid convection built in microwave. It has a door that looks like an oven door. It closes up and makes next to no sound. I thought I was in heaven!! The price of the microwave is about $1500.00. If I ever have to buy another microwave my number one requirement will be quiet door operation!

Thank you, thank you, thank you ALL for sharing your thoughts regarding this issue. For some of us, we suffer from a condition called misophonia. It’s an extreme sensitivity to certain sounds. They don’t have to be LOUD sounds either. I hate it when people don’t close their lips before they bite down on something that crunches. Nothing like a mouth acting as an amplifier to the already irritating sound that chewing makes (whatever happened to manners?).

I agree with Jeff’s solution. My ex and I (BTW, this issue is not why she’s my ex ;-) used to have one with a button and we tried to teach our son to close it while holding the button down, and it DOES work. However, whenever company comes over, it’s back to slamming!!

Well folks, if I can come up with a resolution to this problem, I’ll certainly post it here.
