Someone asked me for a list of interesting books to read. Most of these listed here are pretty much standard issues in their own fields. Perhaps it is the mix that is interesting.

Non Fiction

cover Dealers of Lightning describes the histoy of Xerox Parc. How to (or not to) run a research center under big corporate Xerox, and the history behind the invention of DTP, Ethernet, personal Computing, Smalltalk etc. Recommended
cover

A Timeless Way of Building , Christopher Alexander

This book is interesting in many ways. It is often quoted as a reference for software engineering when talking about design patterns. However the structure and physical presentation of the book appeals to me a great deal.

Steve Jobs: The Journey is the Reward, Jeffrey Young, 1988.

This is a very readable story of Steve Jobs up to the time of the Mac. I think Jobs is the only interesting character in the world of computer.

cover

First Things First, S. Covey

This is a more readable and lighter book than the Seven Habbits. I think his view on life management is deeper than most of the time management books. Some of the quotes from this book I have extracted here.

cover

The Tao of Physics, Fritjof Capra

What's the paralle between Eastern Philosophy and Modern Physics?

cover

The Tao according to Poo

Taoism is. This book is a very easy introduction to the subject.

cover Envisioning Information by Edward Tufte, and The Visual Display of Quantitative Information. Two beautiful books. If you ever have the chance to attend a lecture by Tufte, go.

Megatrend Asia, John Naisbitt

Asia is important. Trust me.

Computing

Algorithm + Data Structure = Program

What can I say. My British computer science training. If you know everything in here you are 10 years head of the next software guy/gal.

Design Patterns

If you know everything in here you are another 2 years ahead.

Fictions

I am not a big fiction reader. Here are some cool SciFi books:
