Asian Classic Literature and Art

Introduction

There are lots of great Asian classic literature, many of them provide perfect insight into the art of living today. This page is a super index page that supply some background material before pointing you to many of the resources on the web which contain the literature text themselves. I found most of these sites do not give enough background information for reader not already familiar with the material.

The Dao De Jing, or Tao Te Ching

This is the Taoist classic written by Lao Zi (LaoTzu). This page contains various version of the text.

The Art of War

The Art of War is a classics on the strategy and tactics of warfare. It is written by Sun Zi. This page contains the English translation of the text. This text is well known even before it was mentioned in the The Sopranos.

Chinese Painting

This website has some good information on classic chinese painting. In particular, then have a page on chinese characters, and symbols and gods glossary.

There is a Japanese Text Initiative by the University of Virginia Library Electronic Text Center and the University of
Pittsburgh East Asian Library.

The Hagakure

The Hagakure is a old Japanese text written by a Samurai, kind of an instructional manual. The movie Ghost Dog - The Way of the Samurai presents small part of this text in a MTV fashion.
