Fifty Shades of GenAI-Assisted Drafts

How five blog posts became fifty, and why that’s not as productive as it sounds

Instead of finishing one of my draft blog posts, I’m using ChatGPT to write this one — about having too many drafts — and publish it instead.

Back in the old days, I felt productive if I had five blog post drafts sitting in my folder. Five was manageable, a nice little backlog of “someday” posts.

Now, with GenAI at my side, that number has multiplied. I don’t just have five drafts anymore — I have fifty. My ChatGPT project folder is overflowing with half-formed ideas, abandoned outlines, and long-winded takes on everything from Django to pickleball to building startups.

Does this mean I’m publishing more? Not really. What it does mean is that drafting has never been easier. GenAI helps me turn passing thoughts into full drafts almost instantly. Have you tried the voice mode with CHAT on the iPhone? I captured and refined many ideas while I am driving - as long as there is 5G connectivity.

The bottleneck isn’t writing anymore — it’s me, deciding what’s worth editing, polishing, and actually sharing.

While having too many drafts is not great, the conversational back and forth with the GenAI model definitely helps me flush out and find new ideas, fine tune the tone of the article, and end up with a more polished result.
